Frequently Asked Questions

01 How difficult is the hike to Humantay Lake?
The hike is considered moderate to challenging due to the altitude. While the trail is only about 1.5 to 2 hours long, you will be ascending to 4,200 meters (13,780 ft). We recommend a steady pace and focusing on your breathing.
02 Can I rent a horse if I find the hike too difficult?
Yes, local community members offer horse rentals at the starting point in Soraypampa. This service is paid directly to the locals in cash (Soles) and can take you most of the way up, though you will still need to walk a very short, flat distance to reach the lakeside.
03 What is the best time of year to visit the lake?
The best time is during the dry season (April to October), when you are most likely to have clear blue skies and see the turquoise color of the water at its brightest. During the rainy season, the peaks may be covered in clouds, which adds a different, mystical atmosphere.
04 Is it safe to visit the lake regarding altitude sickness?
Your safety is our priority. Our guides carry a first aid kit and emergency oxygen at all times. However, the best prevention is spending at least 24 to 48 hours in Cusco to acclimate before attempting this high-altitude trek.
05 Why is the water turquoise?
The stunning color is a result of the purity of the glacial meltwater from the Humantay mountain mixed with specific minerals and algae found at the bottom of the lake. The color can change intensity depending on the sunlight and the time of day.
